Will this be easy or hard?Back in April, I dedicated the month to a solo painting retreat and put all other business tasks on hold. During that sacred container, revelations and breakthroughs arrived through the process and this was one of them. Before we start any project, we often have expectations for something to be hard or easy. If you are anything like me, you might worry that something might be too hard and you won't be able to do it well or you might underestimate and glaze over the potential challenges and just assume it will be easy and not really challenge you in any way. There can be a slew of quick and sometimes subconscious judgements around this perceived scale between hard and easy and the inner critic loves to simplify and make us feel bad either way. If it is too easy, then you are resting on your laurels and not trying to expand or grow. If it is too hard, then you don't have the talent or the skill to do it and will probably fail. However the reality is much more nuanced and rich. Both have their unique gifts and ultimately any hierarchy between the two is an illusion. I experienced this first hand with two paintings during my retreat. With the first painting, I experienced a state of uninterrupted flow from the vision to the final painting. The entire process felt completely familiar and natural to me as if it always existed inside of me and could be poured from me as easily as water from a cup. It came to fruition much more quickly than I expected without thinking or problem solving or doubts or angst. The second painting revealed itself to me in a vision yet kept certain aspects hidden and mysterious. I could not conceive how the color palette, dark/light values and the subject matter would flow together in the best way. I felt as if I was on the edge of my painting skills and I had to start knowing I might fail. I was guided to begin in this uncertain state and figure it out along the way. The painting kept speaking to me and demanding to be changed as I was painting it. When working in watercolor, there are limitations to how much you can change what you have already painted, unlike acrylic or oil painting where you can paint over your mistakes with something completely new. With this practical limitation acting as a creative crucible, I felt the process challenging me and testing my faith and my willingness to experiment. Since I couldn't paint over anything, I came up with the idea to cut out watercolor paper in the shape of the areas I was trying to figure out colorwise. Then, I painted 6-7 variations to experiment with different color palettes, gradients, and lighting. I would hold the swatch up to my painting and see how it felt with the colors and elements that were already in place I felt like I was on a continual quest for the missing piece to a puzzle. When I would finally uncover that missing piece, it felt so revelatory and obvious like I couldn't imagine the painting ever being any other way. The completed painting was calling to me from the future and slowly guiding me to the vision even if I couldn't see it in the beginning. Unlike the first painting, this one took me much longer than I anticipated and challenged me every step of the way. Yet both felt absolutely perfect. There was no hierarchy. Both journeys felt appointed by spirit and gifted me with something much needed and healing in their own way. When we let go of our judgments and expectations, we make room for something unexpected and uniquely beautiful to arrive in our lives. When we stop resisting what feels too easy or too hard, we allow space for things to reveal themselves to us outside this paradigm. Both will change us. Both will be a portal that we walk through and find ourselves transformed on the other side. Ultimately if we feel that intuitive call and follow it, whether it feels hard or easy along the way, we will always be on our sacred path and it will be exactly the experience our soul desires. I will share both of these paintings with you next week right here along with the healing energies that came through each one.
